Taylor's notes contain background material on the diary which records Dyer's journey from Albemarle County, Va., to Missouri and her subsequent life in Missouri. Appendixes list visitors, medications, household duties, farm chores, foods, correspondents, reading material, family members, and special events mentioned in the diary as well as a transcript of the portion of the diary covering the actual journey, 1823, and some special events, 1823-1829.
